Permitting in Stuart — and the address trap

This is the single most useful thing we can tell a Stuart homeowner: a Stuart mailing address does not necessarily mean you are in the City of Stuart. A great many properties that post as Stuart sit in unincorporated Martin County, and the two permit through completely different departments.

Inside the city limits, it is the City of Stuart building department. Outside them, it is Martin County. Different applications, different fee schedules, different reviewers. Filing with the wrong one costs weeks, and it is a surprisingly common way for a project to stall before it starts.
